Director Karan Rajdan returns with more bold, more naught and more controversial film 'Girlfriend'. Karan, who showed the light of fame to video album girl Meghna Naidu in his last sexy film 'Hawas', has introduced some known name this time.
'Girlfriend' does deal with lesbianism, but it's not just that. The film may be termed as a trendsetter in future. It is not as if 'Girlfriend' is the very first film in Hindi cinema that deals with lesbianism.
Tanya (Isha) and Sapna (Amrita) are college friends who live together and enjoy life. Tanya hates men because of a bad experience she had in childhood. She’s possessive about Sapna. Sapna is an innocent girl, she just follows whatever Tanya does. When Tanya is out of town on official work, Sapna meets Rahul. By the time Tanya is back Sapna is in love with Rahul, and when Tanya learns this, she reacts strongly. She can’t digest the thought that one day someone will take Sapna away from her. She realizes that she is crazy for about Sapna. And this feeling is more than just a platonic relationship. There are hidden desires in Tanya. She decides to go all the way to wreck Sapna’s relationship with Rahul. Sapna is caught between friendship and love. What will she do? Whom will she choose?
When Amrita falls in love with Aashish Choudhary, Isha is up in arms and tries her best to break things up between them. Aashish has begun to suspect the friendship but though he confronts Amrita the girl refuses to believe anything is amiss. She is one dumb blonde.
Isha gets all butch by cutting her hair and saying she hates men because she was a victim of child abuse. She gets onto her motorcycle and attacks Aashish. And so on and so forth till one of them must vacate the scene.
Director Karan Razdan manages to keep the audience interest alive in the proceedings. Besides a couple of well-executed sequences, the film has been shot at eye-filling locales of Mauritius, thereby giving the film an upmarket feel. Even the skin show and love making scenes aren’t tacky or downmarket.
Daboo Malik's music tries to make pace with the film but the lust wins and everything else rests behind in this new film of Karan Rajdan that is 'Girlfriend'. GIRL FRIEND has two strong points to woo the Indian masses – sex and shock-value.
